About Reading

Reading is large town and unitary authority area located in the county of Berkshire, England. Located within a short distance of London, Reading today is a commercial centre with a large shopping centre and tourism events such as Reading Festival and the Reading Half Marathon which attract a huge crowd every year. The town has a strong history that dates back to the 8th century and has played a huge part in the industrial revolution.

The closest airport is London Heathrow Airport which is located about 22 miles away from the city, a car journey from the airport to the city centre takes around 45 minutes and through public transport takes around an hour.

Public transport in Reading mostly consists of the train service which operates all around Britain and stops at major cities like London, Birmingham, Liverpool and more. The train station at Reading is used by thousands of tourists every year and is within walking distance of The Oracle which is Reading’s main shopping centre. There is also an excellent bus service that operates throughout all of Reading and offers quick access to the city centre for a relatively low price.

The main shopping centre is The Oracle which is a large indoor shopping and leisure mall with over 80 stores from well-known high street brands such as Apple, Boss, Debenhams, Ernest Jones and H & M. Other shopping areas include Harris Arcade which is full of unique shops, boutiques and independent traders, Broad Street is the primary high street in reading and is full of well-known high street brands, cafes and eateries to choose from.

There are various attractions and landmarks in Reading such as the Museum of Reading which contains galleries that describe the history of Reading and it’s industries throughout the ages. Reading Festival is hosted in the city every year and is the largest of its kind in the UK apart from the Glastonbury Festival.

The University of Reading was established in 1892 and gained it’s university status in 1926, with over 14,000 students the university is ranked 156th in the world according to the 2015 QS World University Rankings.
